AM5 socket — dead centre

The silkscreen beside it reads X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 · Socket AM5. It takes AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series processors, and because AM5 kept the AM4 cooler mounting pattern, most existing AM4 coolers bolt straight on.

The reinforced primary graphics slot uses PCIe EZ-Latch Plus: a quick-release catch you press once to free the card, instead of fishing a finger behind a triple-fan cooler.

Four M.2 drives fit, three of them PCIe 5.0 x4. The broad AORUS-branded plate is the EZ-Latch Click heatsink assembly — the covers release without a screwdriver, and no screws means none to drop onto the board.

Four SATA ports sit on the right edge. Along the bottom run F_USB 20 Gb/s Type-C, two USB 2.0 headers, ESPI_DB, SPI_TPM, front panel audio and three system fan headers.

Digital twin 16+2+2 phase VRM

Sixteen doubled phases for the CPU core plus dedicated stages for the SoC and the memory controller. A Ryzen 9 with all cores boosting is a sustained load, and this is the power stage that holds the clock instead of dropping it.

AORUS thermal armour

The tall finned heatsink over the power stage, and the wide plate across the chipset and M.2 area, exist because PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives run hot. Cooling them is what keeps a Gen5 drive at its rated speed instead of throttling mid-transfer.

Q-Flash Plus

The rear panel has a dedicated Q-FLASH PLUS button. It updates the BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU, no memory and no graphics card fitted — the safety net when you pair the board with a Ryzen newer than its shipped firmware.

Screwless EZ-Latch throughout

EZ-Latch Plus releases the graphics card with one press, EZ-Latch Click opens the M.2 heatsinks without a screwdriver, and WIFI EZ-Plug seats the aerial without threading a tiny connector. Fewer screws over a live board is fewer chances to drop one.

The questions builders actually ask about this board
What is the difference between X870E and X870?+
The E is the wider one. X870E uses a dual-chipset layout that exposes more PCIe lanes, which is how this board reaches four M.2 sockets with three at PCIe 5.0 and still runs two USB4 ports. Plain X870 boards make compromises between those.
Can I keep my AM4 CPU cooler?+
Almost certainly yes. AM5 deliberately kept the same cooler mounting pattern and hole spacing as AM4, so existing AM4 tower coolers and AIO brackets fit. Check with the cooler maker if you are unsure about a specific model.
What can I actually plug into USB4?+
Both rear Type-C ports run at 40 Gb/s with DisplayPort Alt Mode. That covers an external GPU enclosure, a fast NVMe dock, a Thunderbolt-class docking station, or simply a monitor over USB-C carrying video and power in one cable.
Do I need PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives?+
No — the sockets are backward compatible and a Gen4 drive works fine. Gen5 matters for sustained large-file work. If you do fit one, the EZ-Latch Click heatsinks are doing real work: Gen5 drives throttle without cooling.
What does the 2-digit display next to the RAM do?+
It is a POST code readout. If the system will not boot it stops on a numeric code that identifies the stage that failed — CPU, memory, graphics or boot device — which beats swapping parts blind. The onboard POWER and RESET buttons let you test the board outside a case.
Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it over Wi-Fi 6E?+
Only with a Wi-Fi 7 router. It adds wider channels and Multi-Link Operation, which mainly cuts latency spikes rather than raising raw speed. On an older router the card simply runs at that router's standard, and the wired 2.5 GbE port is still there.
Will a Ryzen 9000 chip boot without a BIOS update?+
This board ships with X870E firmware, so 9000 Series support is expected. If you ever hit a mismatch, the rear Q-Flash Plus button updates the BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU fitted at all — and our engineers flash the latest BIOS free of charge when you buy the CPU with the board.
How many drives can I run in total?+
Four M.2 NVMe drives plus four SATA devices — eight drives before you add any expansion card. Note that on any AM5 board, populating every M.2 socket can reallocate lanes, so check the manual's slot table if you plan to fill all four.
