WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with Heatsink
WD's flagship Gen4 game drive in its 4TB heatsink version (WDS400T2XHE). WD rates it at up to 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write on SanDisk TLC 3D NAND, with 2,400TBW endurance, an RGB-lit heatsink that helps hold peak speed through long sessions, and PlayStation 5 compatibility that WD lists for the heatsink models only.
A 4TB Library Without Deleting Games
4TB holds a large library of modern titles at once, and up to 7,300MB/s reads cut load times. WD lists the heatsink version for PlayStation 5, so the same drive suits a gaming PC or the console's M.2 expansion slot.
6,600MB/s Writes, 2,400TBW Endurance
Large project files, game captures and video caches move at up to 6,600MB/s, and WD rates the 4TB model for 2,400 terabytes written, the most of any SN850X capacity except 8TB.
Finned Heatsink With an RGB Strip
The black finned heatsink covers the whole drive, with the orange-lit RGB strip along its top edge. WD says the heatsink helps the drive hold peak performance through long sessions; the RGB colour is set in WD's Dashboard on Windows.
7,300MB/s Read on the 4TB Model
WD's top read figure, up to 7,300MB/s, applies to the 1TB to 4TB models, and the 4TB writes at up to 6,600MB/s. With the heatsink fitted the drive measures 80 × 24.46 × 10.31 mm and weighs 30.4 g.
Ready for Microsoft DirectStorage
Installed in a motherboard M.2 slot, the SN850X supports Microsoft DirectStorage, which lets supporting games stream assets straight from the NVMe drive for shorter load times.
M-Key Edge for One-Notch PCIe Slots
The gold-finger edge has a single notch (M-key) and carries up to four PCIe Gen4 lanes at 16GT/s. It fits one-notch M.2 PCIe slots only, and still works in Gen3 and Gen2 slots at their lower speed.
Sequential Read & Write Performance Comparison Index
Manufacturer-rated maximum sequential read (R) and write (W) speeds in MB/s. Real speeds depend on the slot, file size and cache state.
Hardware Synergy & Platform Compatibility
Pair high-speed NVMe storage with optimized components to unlock maximum bandwidth, instant responsiveness, and zero bottlenecks.
Next-Gen Gaming Motherboards
A board with a PCIe Gen4 M.2 slot runs this drive at its full rated 7,300MB/s.

Frequently Asked Questions & Store Policies
Does it work in a PlayStation 5?
Yes. WD lists PlayStation 5 compatibility for the SN850X heatsink models only, and this is the 4TB heatsink model (WDS400T2XHE). It goes into the console's M.2 expansion slot.
Will it fit in a laptop?
Almost certainly not. With its heatsink the drive is 10.31 mm tall and 24.46 mm wide, which laptop M.2 bays do not have room for. For a laptop, the version without a heatsink (WDS400T2X0E) is 3.88 mm thick.
What happens in a PCIe 3.0 slot?
It still works. WD lists backward compatibility with PCIe Gen3 x4, x2 and x1 and Gen2 x4, x2 and x1, but it runs at that slot's lower speed. You need a PCIe Gen4 M.2 slot to reach the rated 7,300MB/s.
What does the WD_BLACK Dashboard add?
The free Windows-only Dashboard monitors drive health, sets the heatsink RGB lighting and can detect games to turn on Game Mode 2.0. WD's Predictive Loading, Overhead Balancing and Adaptive Thermal Management features also require it.
My motherboard has its own M.2 cover. Which should I use?
Use one or the other, not both. This drive already carries a full heatsink, so it goes in a slot without the board's M.2 cover fitted, and the drive must still be secured with the slot's screw or latch.
How much can I write to it?
WD rates the 4TB model at 2,400 TBW (terabytes written), measured with the JEDEC client workload, which is far more than a gaming or home system writes in years of use. The drive also supports TCG Opal v2.01 self-encryption.
What warranty does this SSD carry?
It is covered by the authorized distributor warranty with local technical support. Details in our Warranty Policy ↗.
