Epson EF-12 — A Compact Laser Projector With Android TV and Yamaha Sound

The EF-12 is a small cube-shaped home projector, about 17.5 cm on each side, finished in black with copper trim. Inside, Epson's 3LCD engine uses three 0.62-inch panels lit by a laser light source that Epson says lasts up to 10 years at five hours a day in Eco mode. It gives a native 1920 × 1080 picture at 1,000 lumens of both colour and white brightness, with HDR10 and HLG support. With a 1:1 throw ratio, a 100-inch picture needs only about 2.2 m. Auto focus and automatic keystone square the picture up for you. Android TV is built in, and 5 W stereo speakers tuned by Yamaha also work as a Bluetooth speaker.

Movie Nights and Streaming

Android TV runs streaming apps without an extra box, and the remote supports Google voice search. Chromecast built-in lets you cast from a phone or laptop. HDR10 and HLG content plays from apps or over HDMI. Epson's Scene Adaptive Color Correction adjusts colour scene by scene, and Cinema and Bright Cinema modes suit a darkened room.

GAMING & SMALL ROOMS

Consoles and Small Rooms

Two HDMI inputs take a console and a streaming stick, and HDMI 2 supports ARC for a soundbar. The 1:1 throw puts a 100-inch picture on the wall from about 2.2 m, so it suits a bedroom or a small living room. Bluetooth lets it play music as a speaker with the picture off.

The three-quarter view shows the lens and sensor window on the front of the black cube, with the input panel on the side. Three 0.62-inch LCD panels and a laser diode give 1,000 lumens and up to 1.07 billion colours. The F2.0, 13.9 mm lens has no optical zoom; the picture is focused and squared up automatically.

From above you see the copper-edged top with five touch buttons: power, picture off, Bluetooth and volume down and up. The Bluetooth key switches the EF-12 into speaker mode for its 5 W stereo drivers tuned by Yamaha, whose logo sits in the corner next to the 3LCD mark.

The input panel carries HDMI 1, HDMI 2 (ARC) for a soundbar, a USB-A port for USB storage, a microphone, keyboard or webcam, a mini USB service port and a 3.5 mm stereo audio out. Below them sit a Kensington lock slot and the DC power input. Both HDMI inputs support HDCP 2.3.

A Big Picture From a Short Distance

Epson's lifestyle shot shows the EF-12 on the floor projecting onto the wall beside it. With a 1:1 throw ratio, the distance roughly equals the picture width: Epson lists 30 to 100-inch pictures from 26 to 88 inches away. Keystone corrects up to ±34° vertically and ±40° horizontally, so it still works at an angle.

Frequently Asked Questions & Store Support

Is the EF-12 true 4K?
No. Its native resolution is Full HD, 1920 × 1080. It accepts 4K signals and shows them at 1080p, and it supports HDR10 and HLG content.
How far from the wall does it need to be?
The throw ratio is 1:1, so the distance is about the same as the picture width. Epson lists a 30 to 100-inch picture from 66 to 224 cm. A 100-inch 16:9 picture is about 2.2 m wide, so the projector sits about 2.2 m away. The maximum picture size is 150 inches.
Is 1,000 lumens bright enough?
It is rated at 1,000 lumens of colour and white brightness. That suits a room with the lights dimmed or curtains drawn, and evening viewing. For a bright, sunlit room or a business meeting room, a brighter projector such as the Epson EH-TW6150 (2,800 lumens) is a better fit.
Do I need a streaming box?
No. Android TV is built in, with Google voice search on the remote and Chromecast built-in for casting. It needs a Wi-Fi connection of at least 5 Mbps. You can still plug in a console or stick through the two HDMI inputs.
Can I connect a soundbar or headphones?
Yes. HDMI 2 supports ARC for a soundbar or AV receiver, and there is a 3.5 mm stereo output for wired speakers or headphones. The built-in 5 W stereo speakers are tuned by Yamaha.
Does the laser need replacing?
No lamp is used. Epson says the laser light source lasts up to 10 years based on five hours of viewing a day in Eco mode, so there is no lamp to buy or change.
